    这个词是昨天上VIP课,跟学生聊天聊到的,小孩儿知道我喜欢听歌,向我强烈推荐,呵呵,确实蛮有意思的,34个字母的一个单词~

    我去做了点功课,下面跟大家分享,这首歌的分析可以作为雅思考题Describe a childhood song的素材哦!

    维基百科上有说:

2011年07月14日 Julie AndrewsDick Van Dyke之Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - MonicaQ - Monica庆相宜的地盘!

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is an English word, with 34 letters, that was in the song with the same title in the 1964 Disney musical film Mary Poppins. The song was written by the Sherman Brothers, and sung by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

     由34个字母组成的单词supercalifragilisticexpialidocious是1964年迪斯尼出品的音乐电影Mary Poppins(《欢乐满人间》)的同名歌曲。作曲是Sherman兄弟,由Julie Andrews和Dick Van Dyke共同演绎。

The roots of the word have been defined as follows: super- "above", cali- "beauty", fragilistic- "delicate", expiali- "to atone", and docious- "educable", with the sum of these parts signifying roughly "Atoning for educability through delicate beauty." Although the word contains recognizable English morphemes, it does not follow the rules of English morphology as a whole. The morpheme -istic is a suffix in English, whereas the morpheme ex- is typically a prefix; so following normal English morphological rules, it would represent two words: supercalifragilistic and expialidocious. The pronunciation also leans towards it being two words since, the letter c doesn't normally sound like a k when followed by an e, an i or a y.According to the film, it is defined as "something to say when you have nothing to say".

The song occurs in the chalk drawing outing animated sequence, just after Mary Poppins wins a horse race. Flush with her victory, she is immediately surrounded by reporters who pepper her with leading questions and they comment that she probably is at a loss for words. Mary disagrees, suggesting that at least one word is appropriate for the situation and begins the song.

     由这首歌,我又想到英语中有不少长单词都很有意思,比如:

     大学时候语言学老师跟我们介绍过Antidisestablishmentarianism,按照构词法就很好理解,意为:反对解散国教主义或反政教分离主义。

     又比如,1975年麦当劳巨无霸的广告创造了一个词Twoallbeefpattiesspecialsaucelettucecheesepicklesonionsonasesameseedbun,其实拆开来看就是巨无霸的配料:two all beef patties,special sauce,lettuce,cheese,pickles,onion,on a sesame seed bun 双层牛肉巨无霸,酱汁洋葱夹青瓜,干酪生菜加芝麻。

     还有,夏威夷有一种有趣的鱼叫humuhumu-nukunuku-a-pua'a,中文翻译为“引金鱼”,是最长的动物词汇,所以英文有说“longer than fish",意为“比鱼都长”,指的就是这种鱼。

      剩下的就是些有趣的了:

      比如,只含有一个原因的最长英文单词是strengths

      全部由元音构成的最长单词是Euouae,是一种中世纪音乐。

      最长的一个字出现的元音顺序就是a、e、i、o、u的字有两个:facetiously(滑稽地)和abstemiously(有节制地)。

      然后,刚刚做功课才发现abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz原来也可以用读单词的方法读出来,芝麻街中出现过,读音是:

歌词:

Mary Poppins:
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
It's... Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it
Is something quite atrocious(糟糕的)
If you say it loud enough
You'll always sound precocious(早熟的)
All:
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay!
Bert:
Because I was afraid to speak
When I was just a lad
My father gave me nose a tweak (揪了一下我的鼻子)
And told me I was bad
But then one day I learned a word
That saved me achin' nose
Bert, Mary Poppins and Chorus:
The biggest word I ever heard
And this is how it goes:
Oh! Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it
Is something quite atrocious
If you say it loud enough
You'll always sound precocious
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay!
Mary Poppins:
He traveled all around the world
And everywhere he went
He'd use his word and all would say
"There goes a clever gent" (就是gentleman)
Bert:
When Dukes and maharajas
Pass the time of day with me
I say me special word and then
They ask me out to tea
Bert, Mary Poppins and Chorus:
Oh.. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it
Is something quite atrocious
If you say it loud enough
You'll always sound precocious
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay!
Mary Poppins:
So when the cat has got your tongue (不知道该怎么说的时候)
There's no need for dismay(沮丧)
Just summon up this word
And then you've got a lot to say
But better use it carefully
Or it could change your life
The Perlie:
One night I said it to me girl
And now me girl's my wife!
